During the Soviet time it was not officially celebrated in Ukraine. Instead communist government tried to substitute Christmas with the holiday of New Year. But people did not forget their traditions.
There are numerous Christmas traditions here. They vary significantly at the different parts of Ukraine. These are scenes from Bible of Jesus birth. They show little Jesus in manger, Mary, strangers offering their gifts and Bethlehem star in the sky. Those verteps are exhibited at public places, usually near or inside churches.
At night candles are installed inside verteps for people who come to church for the night service can observe them. People usually cook some tasty foods for this evening.
Sometimes people use some heads of wheat in a vase rather than a whole sheaf of wheat. After the meal, people love to sing carols or 'Koliadky'. They can be sung around the table or you might go out caroling in the streets. People sometimes carry brightly colored stars on poles when they go caroling singing. Making paper snowflakes to put on the tree or in windows are a popular decoration.
In parts of western Ukraine, Christmas Trees are often decorated with artificial spider's webs because of the story of The Christmas Spider.
