That said, maybe the tale not the tail of the jewfish is worth storing away for future use. Maybe we should ask ourselves whether we should put so much energy into names and labels, and comparatively little energy into asking whether the debate is worth the effort. One problem is that these naming controversies never end. Yes, the jewfish is now the goliath grouper.
But as The Miami Herald noted, this nation has at least nine islands or bodies of water named for the jewfish. Changing all those names would involve sober actions by state legislatures or the very official U. Board on Geographic Names and, well, you know. And let's not even get into the wandering jew a plant that one smart-aleck newspaper reader in Florida has suggested be renamed the roaming nomad.
Or into all the other names of fish--Spanish mackerel, Irish lord--with ethnic-sounding names. Those who insist on red-alert vigilance in these matters can now fuss over, of all things, the newly named goliath grouper.
See, Goliath was that evil Philistine giant who was killed by a stone from the sling of David the shepherd boy. That is very cool DennisW Contributor. So, saying Jewfish is derogatory, but calling it a Goliath Grouper isn't? We will just change the name of the fish to the name of a Philistine who was killed by a Jew. I guess one derogatory choice is better than another. It's still a Jewfish. Sorry if I offended anyone, but the entire Jewfish name change thing is rediculous and stupid.

This is another case of someone judging a name by today's standards rather than in the context it was created. As you can see from the explanations above the term was actually a compliment to the fish by the people it is supposedly offending "who favor a certain type of fish - the jewfish - which they consider to be the grandest kosher fish.
Kosher, because it has both fins and scales, and the grandest, because it is by far the largest kosher fish around" I'll bet Elbers no offense intended also has a problem with the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves.
This is one of the problems with the USA today. Political Correctness run amok. You must log in or register to reply here. Similar threads. Backrolling off a boat, negative entry. The reactions of prominent members of the Jewish Florida community may surprise many. I appreciate their political correctness, but people should think about getting migrant laborers a few more pennies for their tomatoes, do something good for the world.
This is unlikely, as the Miami Herald noted, at least nine islands or bodies of water are named after the jewfish. Renaming them would involve actions by state legislatures whom surely have more important concerns to occupy their time.
Perhaps the lesson here should be taken from the Jewish community. Be aware and considerate of sensitive issues however focus on what is important in life.
