Bryher made a deal with a gnome warlock to keep his daughter close to home. The warlock turned Keelin into a hearthstone, so that she would always return to the inn. The small stone found through archeology resembled a hearthstone. It was warm to the touch and made very faint giggling noises at inopportune moments, which may confirm the story. If you place your Hearthstone into your Bank, you will not be able to use it out in the world, and you can not ask an Innkeeper for a new one.

Comment by Thottbot You cannot buy a new hearthstone from an innkeeper, but when you bind to an inn and you don't have a hearthstone you will be given another one automatically. Comment by Thottbot After destroying one, you don't get one back automatically.
Instead, you have to go to an Inn Keeper and ask to make that place your home. It will be your home and you will automatically recieve a Hearthstone.
