I think thst we can take it as confirmation that a TLoU sequel is in some stage of development. That's because the image was made by one of the concept artists that worked on TLOU. That's why it was "fan art" in parentheses. But I agree, I think they released it as a tease that they're at least toying around with something! People you have to stop thinking too much. He did not see Ellie as someboby who could replace Sarah but as somebody who could bring him happiness again. After Sarah's death, Joel was a sad man, angry, bitter, and this experience transformed him in a bad way. Even Tess said to him " We are shitty people Joel and you know it". Then again, when he argued with Tommy, Tommy implied that he only has nightmares about surviving with Joel.
The fact that Ellie did not leave Joel at the end showed that she really cares for him even if she knows something went up at the firefly's camp. If she was mad at Joel she could have left him because Ellie has a attitude. She is not disapointed to him but she just want to understand what really happened but she knows that Joel would never tell her the truth because he is a difficult man to deal with, this is why she just replied "OK" at the end.
When Ellie came into Joel's life he saw that as a second chance to reconnect with life. This is why he decided to go back to Tommy's and to leave his awful past behind and to start a new, peaceful life with people that he loves. Ellie never had strong feelings towards any other people than towards Joel. With Ellie Joel started to talk about his past, about Sarah, about him and Ellie talked about her past to Joel. I don't know, hopefully The Last of Us 2 will restore the emptiness and unanswered questions, and inevitably bring on many more.
I think Joel and Ellie's story is over. From what I've read, it will be a completely different story with different characters. How would she have known that? And I think when Springtime started when she was looking at the deer she was still reeling from those events — almost being raped and eaten.
My theory is that Ellie was feeling depressed and unresponsive to Joel at the beginning of Spring because either they were nearing the end of their journey and perhaps she knew that she and Joel would have to go their separate ways or that Ellie was reflecting on the whole purpose of her journey and it was that she was doing it for Riley.
She knew she was getting closer to the Fireflies and that meant redeeming herself and she felt solemn thinking about that. Where in Left Behind did you find it? Joel became very cold and distant. Ellie became very depressed to the point she was willing to do anything to find a cure for the illness that killed her best friend.
Ellie was guilt-ridden. I theorize that she contemplated suicide at one point but once she found out she was immune, determined that a better purpose for her life would be to rectify what happened to Riley. And yeah Ellie may have gone on this year-long journey but once Joel realized why Ellie was doing it to begin with.. And in doing so, they found each other.
